‘World War Z’ Movie vs. Book: 4 Huge Differences

About two months ago, Max Brooks, author of World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War , publicly dissed the Hollywood adaptation now raking in the bucks at the box office, warning viewers that the film and his book had one thing in common: the title. If fans were expecting a faithful page-to-screen translation, Brooks said, they would be disappointed. These reactions are understandable. Writers become deeply invested in their creations, and it's difficult to turn them over to someone else, basically giving up all control. How does one pit such disparate narratives against one another and expect a true winner to emerge? You may have your zombie preferences set in stone, but honestly, if fast, rapid zombies are done well, I welcome the genre twist. No, the key to comparing and contrasting these works is to look at the elements they do have in common—character development, morals, and zombie carnage—and see which one handles them better.

It is not the norm of the zombie genre. Clearly this is a massive change to the story. This was simply Pitt's and Hollywood's attempt at taking something people love zombies and cashing in on it. An Oral History of the Zombie War

The fact that " World War Z " didn't turn out to be the incoherent, unwatchable disaster its much-publicized production problems seemed to herald has been the main subject of discussion regarding the epic Brad Pitt zombie action thriller. But let's not forget the somewhat smaller undead elephant in the room: This is an adaptation of "World War Z," the book by Max Brooks, essentially in name only. And the author's non -involvement was baked into the deal. The film's now-notorious production troubles included having no fewer than four successive writers hired to overhaul the screenplay. Plan B first hired J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of "Babylon 5," whose early drafts actually sort of resembled Brooks's book Straczynski turned in another draft, which attempted to pump up the action more to Forster's liking, but it was decidedly not well received.

Many zombie movies are merely mindless gore and violence disguised within some fragile thing that doesn't even deserve to be called a plot. However, World War Z has a much better plot than most other zombie movies.

But added to that, his character is a practically invulnerable bad-ass UN investigator whose field knowledge and ingenuity makes him able to adapt to any situation. I learnt several things from this movie 1 to let go of my preconceptions about what a zombie film should be. It seems unfair to criticise the film for not being like its source material given that it aand didn't try to be but I'm going to start by bringing that up anyway.

All the action sequences are highly entertaining, since Forster's methods are simply the other side of the same coin, but surprisingly bloodless which is peculiar for a film with zombies. I thought that the most interesting aspects of the book were its exploration of how the Zombie plague affected social and political structures across the world.
